1. Lobster
Lobsters are crustaceans (a group of arthropods) belonging to the order Decapoda (meaning ten-legged). They have been known since ancient times, and were once considered a delicacy across Europe and Asia. Today they are primarily caught using traps and trawls, although some species are fished by hand. In Canada, lobsters are mainly harvested off the Atlantic coast, though they can also be found in the Gulf of St Lawrence and along the Pacific Coast.
2. Live Canadian Lobster
The Live Canadian lobster is a type of spiny lobster native to the North Atlantic Ocean. Its scientific name is Homarus americanus. It is commonly referred to as American lobster or Maine lobster. The Canadian lobster is distinguished from its European counterpart by its smaller size, longer antennae, and different coloration. The Canadian lobster is also called the New England lobster, due to its abundance in the waters of the Northeast United States.
3. Size
A female Canadian lobster can reach a length of about 30 cm (12 inches), while males rarely exceed 20 cm (8 inches). Their weight ranges between 0.5 kg (1 pound) and 2 kg (4 pounds).
4. Color
The Live Canadian lobster’s body is covered in dark brown spots and stripes, with lighter colored bands running down their bodies. These colors vary depending on the age and sex of the lobster. Female lobsters tend to have darker coloring than male lobsters.
5. Habitat
The Canadian lobster lives in shallow coastal waters and estuaries, preferring sandy bottoms and mudflats. They prefer water temperatures around 5°C (41°F) and live at depths of 10–30 m (33–100 feet).
6. Food
Lobsters are carnivorous animals that eat small fish, shrimp, crabs, worms, clams, and other invertebrates. They use their claws to catch prey, and then suck them into their mouth. A single lobster may consume several hundred organisms per day.
7. Commercial Importance
In 2016, Canada exported $10 million worth of lobster meat to the United States. Lobster is also popular in Asian cuisine, where it is often eaten raw.
