Octopuses are invertebrates that belong to the phylum Cephalopoda. Octopuses have eight arms, two tentacles, and a head with eyes. There are over 1,500 species of octopuses worldwide. Octopuses are known for their intelligence, adaptability, camouflage, and hunting skills. Octopuses use these abilities to capture prey, defend themselves, and escape danger.
The first octopuses were probably small squid-like creatures. Over time, they evolved into larger forms. In some cases, the body became longer and more slender while the arms remained the same length. Eventually, the arms grew longer than the body. As the arms grew longer, they developed suckers at the ends. These suckers allowed the octopus to attach itself to objects. The suckers also helped the octopus move around.
Characteristics
Octopuses are able to change color. They can turn different parts of their bodies black, white, red, blue, green, yellow, purple, pink, orange, brown, gray, silver, and gold. Their skin is covered with tiny hairs called cilia. When the cilia move, they create ripples across the surface of the skin. This helps the octopus blend in with its surroundings.
Octopuses have many adaptations that help them survive. One adaptation is the ability to change color. Another is the ability to change shape. An octopus can flatten out its body and become invisible. If an octopus gets caught in a net, it can curl up inside the mesh and disappear.
Octopuses eat almost anything. They eat crabs,
fish, worms, shrimp, clams, snails, jellyfish, sea stars, starfish, mollusks, insects, and even other octopuses. They eat everything except sand and rocks.
Octopuses live in warm waters. Most octopuses live near the ocean floor.
However, some octopuses live in fresh water. Fresh water octopuses are rare. They live in rivers, lakes, ponds, and streams.
Octopuses spend much of their lives underwater. They sleep undersea caves or crevices. They hide in holes in coral reefs, under rocks, and in mud. They may stay hidden for days, weeks, months, or years.
Octopuses mate in the springtime. Male octopuses release sperm into the water. Female octopuses collect the sperm and store it in special organs. Sperm travels through the female’s reproductive tract until it reaches her eggs.
Once the sperm enters the eggs, the male octopus releases his sperm into the female octopus’ body. The sperm then swims to the eggs where they fuse together. After the eggs hatch, the baby octopuses emerge from the mother’s body.
Octopuses lay eggs in the summertime. Females lay eggs in clusters. Each cluster contains about 100 eggs. A
female octopus lays between 50 and 200 eggs per day. She can lay several batches of eggs throughout her lifetime.
Octopuses die after reaching sexual maturity. Males reach sexual maturity at 6 to 8 years old. Females reach sexual maturity at 4 to 5 years old.
